About Us

The Walk Across Scotland Idea

Registered in October 2013, Walk Across Scotland is a small, family run business, specialising in self-guided, independent walking holidays.   Alongside our friendly and professional service, we aim to provide customers with a fantastic and memorable walking experience.

Having planned and organised walks for family and friends for a number of years, I made the decision to transform the concept into a venture extending to a much wider audience, providing walkers and outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world with the opportunity to enjoy Scotland’s beautiful landscape.

Walking in Scotland is a very popular activity.  With so many paths and trails to choose from, deciding where you want to go and how long for, is not an easy decision.  At WAS, we will provide customers with the help and advice they need to choose their ideal walking holiday.  Whether it is one of our featured routes or a bespoke, tailor made holiday on one of Scotland’s Great Trails, we hope that we can fulfil all your walking needs.

Ross Mackey - A Brief Profile

Born near Edinburgh, I have lived in the neighbouring county of West Lothian all my life.  Walking and camping all over Scotland is something I have loved to do since I was a boy; from caravan family holidays in the 1980’s to recent wild camping trips with friends, exploring the country’s great outdoors is a passion which has been embedded in me from an early age.

Having spent my whole working life sat behind a desk in a city centre office, without ever being truly happy with ‘the day job’, I made the decision to quit the banking industry and pursue the burning passion inside.  Less than a year later, the dream was realised with the creation of Walk Across Scotland Ltd.

Because of the dramatic mountain ranges, steep gorges and loch filled valleys of the Highlands, the north of Scotland was always the place to get my heart racing; however, I later began to realise and appreciate the labyrinth of fantastic walking opportunities which can be found throughout the country.  Walking more locally has allowed me to introduce my young family to the joys of spending quality time out in the fresh air, exploring woodland trails, climbing the Pentland Hills or skimming stones on the Union Canal.

For any help or advice on any aspect of walking in Scotland, I would be delighted to hear from you.  Please do not hesitate to drop us an email or pick up the phone for an informal chat.

Our Future Vision

As the company becomes more established within the Scottish walking and outdoor activities industry, our aim is to provide more choice to our customers by introducing more walking locations and routes which will eventually reach out to and cover all of Scotland.  We plan to utilise the vast network of paths and trails which already exist, to create a host of walking routes connecting villages, towns and cities throughout Scotland.

 Over the coming months, we plan introduce;

  • Weekend breaks
  • Guided monthly walks
  • An advice service offering guidance on all types of walking routes (short, medium & long)

Part of our vision is to help Scotland become a leading nation in the provision of short and long distance walking; and with local authorities and organisations such as Scottish Natural Heritage continuing to create and develop new and existing walking routes, there are fast becoming more and more opportunities for people of all abilities to enjoy many different types of walks.

Customer feedback and recommendations provide the basis for WAS to develop into a venture which can easily adapt to change, allowing us to continually meet the needs of returning and future clients.  Please do not hesitate to submit your comments – we would love to hear them!!
